J/44

J/44

Fleet Captain: William P. Ketcham

The J/44 is a popular long distance racer/cruiser. It was built to maximize some of the desirable qualities of the successful boats from the 1988 Newport to Bermuda Race. The boat is sailed in 14 countries in both saltwater and freshwater. The boat is known for solid long distance race finishes but is also comfortable for a family cruise.

Many owners have made some adjustments for local and PHRF racing. Boats usually have sails for PHRF and non-class regattas. For J/44 events the boats sail with class-owned sails that are rotated among the fleet to create a stronger one design platform. For J/44 racing, there is an owner-driver rule where owners are expected to helm. Most J/44s have mainsail, genoa, and a symmetric spinnaker.
